.....Andrey Tolshin. Educated at Leningrad senior school and Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema. Docent of St. Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, Professor at Russian State Pedagogical Herzen University.
Teaching experience: From 1993 and currently in St. Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, Russian State Pedagogical Herzen University, The Academy of young singers of Mariinski Theatre. Ph.D. dissertation in theatre with emphasis in theatre education : improvisation and fundamental principals of the Russian School of Acting (encapsulating the well known methods of famous Russian teachers - K. Stanislavski, Y. Vaktangov, M. Chekhov, G.Tovstonogov, M. Knebel, B. Zon, L. Makariev, A. Katsman etc). Teaching from the beginning to M.A and B.A. degree. Doctor of Culturology with dissertation: “Phenomena of mask in theatre culture”, defended in St.Petersburg’s State University. 25 Printed works including study guide «Improvisation in teaching an Actor», monographs: «Ritual, Model, Actor», «Creative potential of a Person and Improvisation Component thereof (Creativity Development Problems) » in association with N.V. Rozhdestvenskaya.
Overseas experience: 1996 Finland Kokkola - Lecturer from St.Petersburg Theatre Arts Academy, Invitation from Finland.1999 - researcher at the Theatre Department of Dramatiska Institutet Stockholm. Holds Certificate in Teaching of acting and directing in practice and theory. Practical work in Theatre Academi Stockholm, Malmo Theatre Academy, University of Malardalen. Invitation from Swedish Institutet: 1998, 2001, 2002, and 2003 - visits to Sweden as Lecturer from St.Petersburg Theatre Arts Academy. In 2003 participant in International festival “Methodica” Stockholm. Had taken part in various international conferences 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004 and joint projects of Theatre Arts Academy with National Theatre Institute and the Eugene O’Neil Centre USA (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2011), Dramatic Institute Stockholm (1997, 2000, 2003), in Summer School 2002 «Stanislavski and Meyerhold: Two Approaches to Acting», 2004 - International Federation for Theatre Research Annual Conference «The director in the theatre world».
Particular interests are: teaching of acting skills (encapsulating musical theatre actors), using and improving on the fundamental principals of the Russian school of acting and directing; research in modern theatre forms based on transformation, movement, grotesque, musical structure, social and human visions.
